Debbie Mackinnon is not just an artist, mentor and inspiration but she is stylish. I took the opportunity when I caught up with Debbie Mackinnon last week to also get her take on fashion, ageing and what is important in her life.
Who are the designers you like?
Lisa Ho, Lee Mathews, Nicole Farhi Nyne ( NZ)
What sort of clothes appeal to you?
Comfortable, easy to wear, with great colours and fabrics, I can’t bear tight and restrictive clothing. Natural fibres like linen. I love scarves and fabulous earrings.
Do you have any style icons?
Juliette Binoche, Diane Keaton, Judi Dench, Helen Mirren. All Fabulous and over 60…
How do you feel about getting older?
I’m pretty grateful to be here, so thats at the top of my list. No one loves getting wrinkles but that’s what happens… I probably feel more confident now than when I was younger.
Do magazines or add campaigns talk to your generation?
No not much. How do you approach fashion compared to your mothers generation? I don’t worry about what my peers think about me. I remain comfortable in my own skin and style.
Where are the clothes from in the shots?
Elk, Zara, Cos, Swoon at Ettalong, Moochinside at Killcare, Whistles (UK), J Brand Jeans (David Jones)
What are the things that are most important in your life as you get older?
Family. Friends. Creativity. Travel. Art and painting – both doing it and looking at it. Great food and wine.
