The Ritz Cinema in Randwick – Done up

When Chris King and I decided to see Ottolenghi and the Cakes of Versailles, a lovely documentary you learn a lot about Versailles and Ottolenghi, Chris suggested the Ritz Cinema in Randwick.

This vintage Art Deco style Cinema has recently been DONE UP, note, not renovated. This, I have to say I loved. The Ritz Cinema has retained its charm ... in fact the DONE UP bit I think may well have been limited to some new velvet covered lounges and some rather pedestrian bathrooms.

The Ritz Cinema's, themselves, are great. Big Screens in small theatres, comfy seats and wonderful sound. It made a lot of difference to the movie watching experience.

There is a bar - not DONE UP - and an outside terrace ... given the times we are living in ... a wonderful bonus!

Also the people who run the Ritz seem to have a sense of humour " If Darth Vader can wear a mask for 23 years you can for your movie" is the banner out front!

Puttin’ on the Ritz since 1937

Ritz Cinemas is steeped in rich history and tradition. Built in 1937 and now Heritage-listed, it is one of only two original Art Deco cinemas remaining in Sydney. Family-owned, independent, and still offering the lowest price movie tickets around, the cinema has survived a fascinating history of tumultuous change and holds an important place in the local culture.
