The Everglades Historic House – Leura

We visited Everglades in Leura on our recent weekend away in the Blue Mountains. The Tearooms and food are as Art Deco as the house ... a true experience. Now ... the gardens will be singing.

A spectacular, world-renowned garden set against a backdrop of bush and sweeping views. In the middle of it all lies a stunning Art Deco home. A beautiful spot to wander, to picnic, or to enjoy a Devonshire tea.
Drawing from the great traditions of European landscape design and the unique Blue Mountains bushland, Everglades will charm with its grace and beauty. The Moderne-style 1930s home is set amongst 5.2 hectares of graceful gardens.

The original owner of the house, Georgina Stonier, christened her mountain home The Everglades in 1923. The reason for the name is not self-evident as she is not known to have visited Florida and the Leura site lacks swamps and alligators! But when the Van de Veldes took ownership of the property in the 1930 they kept the name.

The gardens were constructed in the 1930s by Danish-born landscape gardener Paul Sorensen and are Australia’s most spectacular inter-war period gardens receiving acclaim from garden lovers worldwide.

A stroll along formal European-style terraces and winding paths will reveal the many moods of Everglades, from the tranquil Reflection Pool amongst towering trees from all over the world, to the subtle charms of the lookout and contemplative Grotto Pool. You will also enjoy the surprise unveiling of vistas through to Mt Solitary and the Jamison Valley.

  1. Really lovely place to visit and take a leisurely stroll. Afternoon tea with a magnificent view of the mountains. A must visit if in the area.
