Telex from Cuba, a great holiday read

Some of you may have read Rachel Kushner’s latest book “The Flamethrowers”, It’s said to be a great read. I’ve just finished her first book, Telex from Cuba.  Set in Cuba in the 1950’s among an American expatriate community that oversaw the three thousand acres of United Fruit Company, a paradise for a time and for a few. A plantation society that is about to be overtaken by the revolutionary forces of Fidel and Raul Castro. A meticulously researched  book that is multilayered and absorbing. Kushner has managed, according to Susann Cokal of the The New York Times Book Review  to conjure “a dreamy, sweet-tart meditation on  a vanished way of life and a failed attempt to make the world over in America’s image….Kushner has fashioned a story that will linger like a whiff of decadent Colony perfume”. It is a book that if you have any yearning to experience Cuba before it’s made over by America’s image again, to move now……
