The Stylish Ms Susan Bogle wears Sark Studio

The very stylish Ms Susan Bogle wears the designs of Theresa Jackson of Sark Studio in this spread and then very kindly answered some questions about life, fashion, ageing and her style. This is a woman very comfortable in her own skin.

WHO ARE THE DESIGNERS YOU LIKE?

I don't really follow designers. Once we had kids, there was never enough money for designer fashion. I used to like Paul Smith, Vivienne Westwood - I had a VW skirt that I loved. Katherine Hamnett. And of course Sark. I've always loved Theresa (Jackson)'s clothes. I still wear Sark pieces I've had for 30 years. And now I work with her, I have a lot more, which is fantastic.

WHAT SORT OF CLOTHES APPEAL TO YOU?

I like clothes that are quirky, well-made, natural fibres, that are comfortable. That pretty much defines Theresa's style. My go-to outfit when I'm at home is my gardening clothes - a pair of King Gee cotton trousers and a man's shirt, which I buy from op shops.
DO YOU HAVE ANY STYLE ICONS ?
I always look forward to seeing what wonderful creation  Lee Lin Chin is wearing. She's fabulous. I love that she's never followed that TV presenter corporate style, which is just so boring. Our Mum was a great dresser - she had beautiful clothes, terrific little 60s suits and black dresses, an amazing shoe collection, hats, gloves. Tilda Swinton always looks fabulous, wears great clothes and I love her hair, her whole look.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT GETTING OLDER
I agree with Lucinda Williams. It sucks. But I guess I'm comfortable in my own skin, and I don't really care what people think about me.

DO MAGAZINES OR AD CAMPAIGNS TALK TO YOUR GENERATION?

The only time I look at glossy mags is when I go the skin specialist. I'm never at the hairdressers long enough to look at the magazines, and I don't buy them or subscribe. I suppose the only ads I look at sometimes are the ones in the Gardening Australia mag or Organic Gardener. I quite like checking those out to see what new products are out there. But as far as fashion, cosmetics, handbags, those sorts of campaigns just pass me by.

HOW DO YOU APPROACH FASHION COMPARED TO YOUR MOTHERS GENERATION?
See above. I don't think we're that different, although she was much more limited in what was available to her, living in the country, and there just wasn't the choice that we have now. But she loved clothes, and had a distinct sense of style. But maybe we dress more to please ourselves now, rather than our husbands. She told her daughters 'darling it's always a good idea to go and brush your hair and put some lippy on before your husband gets home'. Two things I never do, and he's often home when I get back from work, and dinner's on. Not an experience Mum has ever had!

WHERE ARE THE CLOTHES IN THE SHOTS FROM?

They are all from Sark Studio on Crown St, Surry Hills, designed by Theresa Jackson, and all made in Sydney.

My hat is by Axel Mano, Queen Street, Woollahra.

WHAT ARE THE TINGS THAT ARE MOST IMPORTANT IN YOUR LIFE AS YOU GET OLDER?

Family and loved ones. Health, more time in the garden, less time in the kitchen. I wish my girls - all my family - lived in the same city. We have a large, tight family but we're all far flung.

  1. So lurved seeing this Lorrie. The divine Ms Bogle looks sublime. Wonderful ode to spring. And the clothes quietly star.
