A FASHION LABEL WITH A DIFFERENCE.
The Social Outfit are a social enterprise fashion label founded with the purpose of supporting women from refugee and new migrant communities to kick-start their Australian careers and thrive through employment. They operate an ethical manufacturing workroom and retail store in Newtown, Sydney. 100% of the profits from our clothing sales go towards supporting our training and employment programs in retail, manufacturing and design. We’re passionate about sustainability too, our clothing collections use remnant fabrics donated by our fashion industry partners – we’ve saved 8.5 tonnes of fabric from landfill to date.
1. 70% of our organisation’s activities are running our shop and workroom, providing employment opportunities for the refugee and new migrant community in manufacturing and retailing ethical fashion. 30% of our organisation’s activities are running free training and education programs for our community, delivered through our sewing school and creative projects.
2. Our sewing school, online school, creative programs and events provide welcoming opportunities for people from the new migrant and refugee community to expand their social connections. Individuals can express themselves, share their worries and ideas, and come together in an encouraging environment.
3. We’ve had more than 400 people from the refugee and new migrant community participate in our sewing school, digital print projects, creative programs and fashion events!
4. We have more work to do, and one of our ongoing focuses is providing opportunities for creativity and collaboration in our community, especially for young people. (Source: Scanlon Foundation Community Discussion Paper, 2016)
