Rhiannon Giddens – her music and influences

Riahhon Giddens

Rhiannon Giddens was by far and away my favourite performer at Bluesfest, so I thought I’d share some of her music and background. Notes from the Official program talk about how T Bone Burnett came to produce her first solo album. He says of her ” It was the first time I heard her at rehearsal that Rhiannnon is next in a long line of singers that includes Marian Anderson, Ethel Waters, Rosetta Tharp, Odetta, Mahalia Jackson, Nina Simone”, ” We need that person in our culture. She is in fact, that person in our culture”. Her solo album Tomorrow is my Turn in corporates gospel, jazz, blues, country and rock and roll ( courtesy of Rosetta Tharpe) it is a magnificent debut and was nominated for a Grammy this year.

The bowler hat, an Akubra, was picked up when she played a gig in the Blue Mountains before Bluesfest. There is more………
