PICA is Peruvian cuisine with a comtempory twist. A tiny restaurant a stone's throw from the Mingle Bar in 1. Dewi Sita, Ubud, Bali. So do book.
It’s a big surprise to find a very good Peruvian restaurant in the middle of Ubud. PICA is run by a lovely couple – Chilean born chef Cristian Encina and Monica Fernandez from the Philippines. Monica manages front of the house and gives impeccable explanations about the menu and wonderful suggestions.
The restaurant is small with a simplistic design but warm and very welcoming.
Try the ceviche Nikkei, a subtle Japanese take on the Peruvian classic of raw mahi-mahi, red onion, thinly sliced coriander, tamarillo dressing and lime marinade used to cure raw seafood, known as ‘leche de tigre’. It was very fresh and full of flavour. The causa del mar is unique and delicious too, a Peruvian potato cake trio served with different seafood toppings. The smoky bife ancho, perfectly cooked beef rib eye served with chimichurri sauce (a Peruvian pesto) is just mouthwatering.
I can’t wait to return to PICA to try some more of chef Cris’creations that bring in a fresh taste of classic Peruvian cuisine with a contemporary twist. This is not a cheap eat by Bali standards but well worth the visit. Also it has a very fine wine list.

This was one of the great finds of the last trip to Bali …. sophisticated, wonderful but relaxed atmosphere …. great flavours, and service, and dining experience. Supplemented by some seriously wonderful selection of glasses of wine ….
Another ‘must do’ if looking for a top meal in Ubud …
