I have to be honest I have never been a fan of the Opal, HOWEVER … after going to the Workshop on Opals at Jewels on Queen and listening to Sheridan Kennedy talk about their properties and qualities I have reappraised.
Like the Rainbow Serpent depicted in Lydia Baker’s hand-stamped silver pin, opals come in all colours of the spectrum. From flashy reds and iridescent greens to indigo blues and purples, these gems are seriously bedazzling. They’ve inspired some stunning pieces for our current show at Jewels on Queen called Opal Fever which runs through until October 19.
Last Saturday they hosted the first of our Opal Appreciation Groups with jeweller Sheridan Kennedy who hails from the Queensland opal town of Winton. Next Saturday, Linda Jackson takes time out from preparations for her major retrospective at the Powerhouse Museum to lead the second in our series. And the following Saturday Lydia Baker travels down from Bundjalung country to share her love of opals with us.
Join us for a deep dive into our national gemstone and feel the rush of Opal Fever!
Opal Appreciation Groups:
12pm – 2pm October 5 – Sheridan Kennedy
12pm – 2pm October 12 – Linda Jackson
12pm – 2pm October 19 – Lydia Baker
