Maiz is a very exciting new arrival, a restaurant delivering real Mexican Street Food on South King Street, Newtown. A rave review popped up on my friend Margot Saville's Instagram feed. She is not a woman one ignores when it comes to a food...or anything else really. Slim and I grabbed a favourite Rosé ( its BYO ) and booked in for lunch last Friday.
The chef Juan Carlos Negrete is from California Baja on the West Coast of Mexico and went to cooking school in Pueblo. He and partners Julian Lombana and Deborah Mignot migrated Maiz from the Summer Hill markets to the southern end of King Street at 415 to be exact, a few months ago.
You must book, it's that popular already. Opens at 8 am for Breakfast and closes at 2.30 after lunch, Wednesday - Sunday. They are waiting for their liquor licence then they will have a different menu for dinner + Mescal and Tequila.
Maiz isn't Tex Mex, it's real Mexican street food dishes from Tlacoyos, Quesadillas, Chilaquiles, Sopes and Tortas, Corn Bread with hand churned butter.
We started with a couple of Sopes: Mole Co Papa was macadamia mole, potato sesame seeds and amaranth then the Res Barbacoa topping was beef Barbara, nopales guacasals chipotle picked onions. We then shared a Tlacoya (thick blue corn flatbread) with a topping called De Aguacate: Avocado, fennel corn herbs merit and cinnamon oil and black beans. Finishing up with Quesadillas - hand pressed blue and white tortilla + salsa, we tried the Longaniza Verde, Oaxaca cheese, house made green chorizo, house escabeche.
Oh and we shared the desert, a brioche with a cheese and Guava, not too sweet...just right!
Such a delightful addition to the hood. Lovely, lovely people and delicious food. Go, but book!
