For this lunch with Chris, her birthday lunch, we tarted ourselves up and headed to the iconic fine dining establishment … Catalina in Rose Bay. This is old stomping ground for Chris, she has been wine and dined here a great deal throughout her career as a Casting Agent. It was a first for me.
The Modern minimalist restaurant with its view to the harbour and the comings and goings of the seaplane port is a magnet to a very eclectic crowd. Behind us a couple of asian tourists ordered cocktails and half dozen oysters and instagramed their way through the afternoon (but who am I to talk) a few tables over a fever of developers plotted and dealed, a young couple celebrating something big and then a splattering of Eastern Suburbs matrons made up the room.
We settled in for the afternoon with three courses and a lovely bottle or Rosé.
Entree I had the Burrata, heirloom and organic tomatoes, pepitas, pine nuts, mustard leaves, white Balsamic vinegar, Chris had Pan seared sea scallops, sauntered squid, char-grilled went corn, chipotle, romesco crumb.
Mains I had the Crispy skin cone Bay Barramundi, tempura zucchini flower, prawn mousse, saffron Aroli, Auriga, Asparagus, sauce vierge Chris had … Glacier 51 tooth fish, dutch carrots, caramelised daikon, Enoki, Shiitake mushroom dumpling dash consommé.
Desert, Birthday girl … Passionfruit and white chocolate cheesecake fresh passionfruit. Moi Caramelised fig, bitter caramel mousse, brik pastry pistachio praline.
It was a delightful way to spend the afternoon. If you can get someone else to pick up the tab…
