Indus is our favourite restaurant in Ubud, it’s across the road from Ananda Cottages where we stay, most of the time, and a 5 minute drive from the centre of Ubud. It overlooks the Tjamphuhan River and enjoys breathtaking views of the surrounding hills, so always try to book a table on the balcony.
Indus is part of Australian, Janet De Neefe and her Balinese husband’s collection of restaurants, guesthouses and cooking school. The food is a mix of delicious local recipes passed down from his family and then given an Australian twist by Janet.
On Monday nights there is a Latino band, Buena Tierra, with locals tearing up the dance floor with exaggerated tango moves – very colourful –
Twilight Cocktails every night between 5 – 7pm with complementary tapas, I enjoy the classic martini. Anon’s favourite dish Balinese – style Paella is not to be missed…….but if you do buy the book “ The Food of My Island Home” by Janet De Neefe ….. give yourself all day to make it.

I can vouch for Janet’s recipes having made many dishes from her book fragrant rice. Must get the new one you mention Lorrie. Your’re right, it takes all day! It may take a while to gather all the fresh ingredients and make the dishes but it really is an exercise in mindfulness and when the dishes reach the table, people swoon over the tastes.
Thanks Lorrie. Janet and I will be at the Writers’ festival in October and Indus is on our list. The cocktail hour sounds like a great way to relax after a day of food for the mind…
