Hotel Alfonso X111, Seville, Spain

Its Morrish arches and Italian marble fountain make the Alfonso’s courtyard Resaurant, San Fernando, a delightful setting for breakfast. This grand hotel is the favoured huant of politicians, visiting US film stars and the glamorous, gossibpy wives of the top bullfighters, the crowd is never dull.

Built in the final days of the pre=Civil War monarch, it is an empire’s last architectural gasp in wood, marble and decoration from long- gone institutions like the Real Fabrica de Tapices.

In summer come for Sunday bruch ( April to October from 1pm ) a fine spread of tapas, salads and verrines served next to the best pool in town.

It is a welcome respite from the heat in a city where temperatures in July and August can rival those in the Sahara.
