My Easter treat of choice is the Hot Cross Bun. I like it with a very good butter and as a extra sweet treat the Blood Orange marmalade from Cornersmith.
As I live in Newtown I have been spoilt for choice with two pretty good artisan bakeries, the Blackstar Vegan buns with a frankincense glaze are good and pretty expensive $4.50 per bun. The Bourke Street Bakery sell a bloody big hot cross loaf as well as buns, this is delicious.
This year however I’ve gone out of the hood in search of my treat. A hole in the wall bakery called Baked by Keiran at 455 Marrickville Road Dulwich Hill.
Keiran has done away with sultanas completely and used dates and cranberries. mingle this with the bun’s mixed spice for sweetness and tang. The slow-fermented bus use top-quality Australian flour from Laucke and if you’re in of a sourdough loaf ( white only ) Keiran bakes what might be the inner west’s best.
