The Galle Face Green is a one kilometre stretch of land, facing the Indian Ocean in Colombo the capital of Sri Lanka. This piece of grass comes alive every Saturday and Sunday night. Sri Lankans of all religions gather, promenade dip toes into the ocean fly kites, play cricket, flirt …. young muslim women meet young muslim men under the watchful eye of the family.
Food stalls stretch the entire seafront. It is innocent, peaceful and democratic – a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the rich mix of cultures that make up Sri Lanka. On our last visit the Green was under threat … a large Chinese company were in the process of filling in the ocean in front of the green to build a huge complex – Dubai style – of malls and apartments.
The construction has been halted by the newly elected Sri Lankan government, to check the proprietary of the contracts …. fingers crossed the Green will survive.
There will be a Sri Lankan post every week for some time……
This is a large slide show and may take a bit of time to load …..
