Congratulations to the cartoonist Cathy Wilcox

Cathy Wilcox is one of those rare orchids, an Australian Female Cartoonist, she was just named cartoonist of the year by Museum of Australian Democracy .... Congratulations Cathy.

Cathy Wilcox has been drawing cartoons since she was old enough to scratch the furniture.

She honed her skills in the margins of school textbooks — always an eye out for squarish blank spaces.

She earned her letters at Art College. This was followed by a fermentation period of a few years in the cultural petri-dish of Paris.

Eventually the Sydney Morning Herald took pity on her and gave her her own blank spaces to fill.

And here she is, churning out cartoons almost daily since 1989, pausing only to procreate, make cups of tea and collect cartooning awards.

She has cocked her skeptical eyebrow and poked her inky nib at pretty much any subject you care to name.

I was unable to find a photographer credit for the image of Cathy Wilcox ... above. Sorry.

  1. When I buy a SMH or look g into the website the first page to visit is always to see what CW has had to say.

Her distillation of complex political and social stories and issues into a few cartoon frames with razor sharp words is simply amazing and almost unfathomable how the does it.

Her cartoon yesterday about the SAS issue was devestating in its simple truth and deserves an award in itself.

Bravo to CW. Deservedly top of the class.
