This is a repost... I started doing posts called Be a Tourist at Home last year. I thought I should start to travel at home the way I have done overseas, with a curious eye and open heart. Covid has elevated the need and my desire to make these posts on a more regular basis.
You have got to love a suburb with a sense of humour. Summer Hill has a bar called Temperance ... it's right next door to the Milk Bar, that happens ... also to be a bar.
I wandered around on a Saturday afternoon, when the cafes were just closing and the bars about to open.
Summer Hill is a gem, beautiful, quiet yet buzzing inner west suburb it has all the pros with very very minimal cons. Easy parking, shops, wine bar, pub, brand new IGA supermarket with a cheese room. restaurants, post office, wine store, hairdressers, homeware stores butcher with a knife sharpening service.
It has all modes of public transport - trains (15min to central), buses and the tram straight into China town, exhibition centre and the Fish markets. Gorgeous homes with tree lined streets. Once in a while you will get airplane noise but its nothing like Stanmore or Leichhardt.
People that live in Summer Hill frequent Summer Hill and its rare to have out of towners .... so to speak, so its a real bonus and not overly busy with wannabe hipsters, but you know some. This isn't a "loud" suburb like Newtown, so its more relaxed and chilled, for the "locals" that prefer a more relaxed lifestyle with all the convenience as almost all inner west suburbs are 5-10min drive - the city is 15 min drive
