Anon recently had a month of celebrations for his 60th birthday, and I’ve used the various events as an excuse to try a lot of the cakes from a local café, The Black Star Café.
The one pictured is called Delicious Cake, a moist coconut cake baked within almond dacquoise and brought together with fresh cream garnished with honey poached pears, grapes and lavender, and then finished with toasted meringue.
Lovely, but not our favourite, maybe too much cream.
The week before we tried the Zen cake, layers of pistachio ganache, white chocolate mousse, lemon curd and pistachio dacquoise. This was sensational, very rich, so small portions only.
Our favourite is the Orange cake with Persian fig, made from whole boiled oranges, it is moist and decadent, garnished with cream cheese icing and seasonal preserved fruit, Persian figs, pistachios and rose petals. Delightful and very beautiful.
The most popular cake is the Strawberry Watermelon Cake with rose scented cream, this is what crowds of travelling Chinese queue for, it was featured on several travel blogs. So be prepared for a wait if you go on a weekend.
The café, established by Christopher The, has become so popular he has opened a bigger café in Rosebery.
So, needless to say, after such an indulgent month it was back to the Gym……for both of us…..
