ABOUT SALLY

After 25 years as a film designer, during which I made many trips to India collecting fabrics, I finally decided to produce my own collection. My desire is to create beautiful handcrafted textiles and give them a contempary edge to suit modern environments. All my quilts, throws and cushions are either ‘hand-dyed’, ‘hand-stiched’, ‘hand-woven’ or ‘hand block-printed’. Unlike machine-made products, they fade naturally and imperfections are part of their beauty and uniqueness.

I travel to many remote communities, working closely with the artisans. Different areas in India specialise in different crafts. I work with women who create exquisite applique work in the desert near Pakistan, natural dye block printers in Rajasthan, village weavers in Bengal and Hyderabad, and women who do intricate hand embroidery in Lucknow. Like other Western designers working in India, I am hoping to keep these ancient crafts alive as we compete with the manic rush to modernisation. My textiles are carbon neutral and eco friendly. A percentage of the sale price goes back to the rural communities which make them.

When Sally first exhibited her range in 2005, Sydney style guru Melissa Penfold called the collection “museum worthy” (Sydney Morning Herald, 17 November 2005). Since then Sally has refined and extended her range. She exhibits regularly at the Shapiro Gallery in Woollahra and has also shown in galleries in Palm Beach, Clovelly and Bowral. Outside NSW there have been shows in Brisbane, Melbourne and Auckland.

Sally has been featured in many leading homewares magazines including Vogue Living, Home Beautiful, In Style, Notebook and Marie Claire. She also appeared in High Life (Southern Highlands), Essential and Domain Home (Sydney Morning Herald) and The Age.

  1. O my lord, these fabrics are sublime. Really wish I had the time to drop in for a visit and a hello.

Sally was one of the most gifted props buyer and set dresser then production designer in the renaissance of the film industry in the 70s and 80s, and it is no surprise that these collections show the same sense of style and beauty and an admirable commitment to supporting and preserving centuries old artisan skills.

What a privilege to have been able to work with her.

Hope the two shows go well … as Lorrie says, run, not walk, to them
