To be honest it may be too late to experience this charming and authentic café in Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown. The voracious property developers had their wrecking balls poised ready to flatten it when we visited a few months ago. It’s a shame because the pre-WW1 shophouses along Jalan Balai Polis thrum with historical resonance, and none more so than the premises occupied by Old China Café. Formerly the guildhall of the Selangor & federal Territory Laundry Association, the building is structurally intact, right down to the sagging staircase that leads to the musty furniture gallery upstairs.
All of which makes the menu of Peranakan and Eurasian classics – babi pong the (pork stew), tart Assam prawns, laksa, chendol ( coconut ice with noodles and devil’s curry – such an authentic pleasure.
