Mexico City – eat at, El Cardinal Restaurant

El Cardinal Restaurant, Centro Mexico City, January 2017

El Cardinal restaurant was another wonderful recommendation of  “Young” Victoria Roberts. We decided on the most traditional, there are several restaurants, and went to the one in Centro Historico. The branch that has opened at the Mexico Hilton is very popular.

I could have people watched all day, the service is impeccable and the food……delicious – of course we over ordered. For Anon this restaurant is the bench mark for THE BEST BEER ever, icy cold, chilled glass with lime juice at the bottom. I need desperately to go back for breakfast..the list of reasons to head back to Mexico just grow and grow…

I loved this welcome on their website.

Dear visitor: You have arrived at this house, to this table. It is your house and it is your table. On them you shall see an endless number of “Cinderellas” of national-popular Mexican food pass before your eyes. They have been dressed in festive clothes to be rediscovered by you.

They are fruit of our people’s culture and creativity. You might have seen them before in humble homes and wealthy houses, at markets and squares, wearing their everyday garments or Sunday dresses. When you see them and try to recognize them, dear guest, don’t do it in such a way that hurts their dignity.

You have almost no need of all the silverware that lavishly ornaments other tables. Something more simple, smooth and delicate is enough. Don’t you remember that we were made from corn?*

*This phrase refers to the “Popol Vuh”, sacred book of the Maya, which narrates the creation of man out of corn.

  1. Loved this Restaurant so much. Atmosphere, service (including the interesting touch of the hairnets), stunning traditional and very real Mexican food ……. and of course the beer …..

My Corona was so cold it was just short of icing up. I had been ordering some lime with beer, and it normally came as slices or wedges to add as you like. At El Cardinal, they brought the large ice cold glass already with about a cm of squeezed lime juice (with some extra in a little jug). In went the icy Corona, which became immediately infused with the lime juice ….

Try it yourself …. Corona heaven.
