Raffles Hotel Le Royal, Phnom Penh, Cambodia is blessed with history and style, atmosphere and aesthetics. First established in 1929, graced through the years by legends including former U.S. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy.
Located in the heart of this steamy dirty capitol of Cambodia, it is a refuge, an island of lush green and luxury with walls decorated with exclusive Khmer collections.
The Elephant Bar is the hub of the city’s ex-pat social scene – has a staff nearly as old as the hotel – afternoons over weight tourists, wives of diplomats per-take high tea but in the evenings the crowd becomes more interesting …. I called it spook watch, clusters of very interesting characters huddle in corners sucking on beers and smoking cigars talking in low murmurs with one eye always cocked toward the entrance. Very Graeme Green.
